Death Star Discotheque - Face Yourself - Artwork

Death Star Discotheque is back with a blast of a single. After the successful single ‘We Are XTC / Dance’, which managed to get attention at the national and international indie radio stations halfway through last year, the band from Eindhoven is now returning with the once again exciting ‘Face Yourself’.

Singer and songwriter Michel Geelen about the track: “Face Yourself is a song that we have actually been playing live since 2019, and that has always performed very well at live shows. It’s one of my favorite Death Star Discotheque songs, so we decided to record it during the lockdown period. ”

Everything is recorded remotely and from home, but the result is great!

Recording and producing the song during the lockdown period was not easy, because the studios were closed. Singer and songwriter Michel Geelen: “We did a lot online. Everyone records their own things at home, send them to each other, and then the rest can get started. An intensive and time consuming process, but I must say that I am more than satisfied with the result.”

A song about introspection

Lyrically, the title, ‘Face Yourself’, leaves little to guess. Geelen: “I actually say: look in the mirror more often. I don’t mean that in a pedantic way, with the idea that everyone should do this, but more from myself. Where and how do I live? Am I still doing well towards others, and how do I deal with myself? A little introspection is always good for a person … hahaha. ”

Or as Robert Smith from The Cure sang in the song ‘Fire in Cairo’:
“Mirror Pool
Mirrors the lonely place
Where I meet you”

For ‘Face Yourself’ a music video had been made, by Wouter van Empel, a creative design student at St Lucas College. The result is magnificent!

Cronin have just dropped a new ‘snipe mix’ of the single “Several Perceptions”. It’s a taster of their upcoming mini album, A View From The Next Room, due out July 3rd.

The brand new album delivers the band’s “most experimental and diverse” set of songs to date. On the making of A View From the Next Room, Mick Cronin says: “Some of these mixes have been about for some time and others are relatively fresh. With us unable to work in the studio we thought now would be a good time to release these as a mini album. “It’s a diverse mix compared to our releases so far, it shows another side of what we have in our heads.”

The album title is a reference to the Henry Scott Holland poem Death Is Nothing at All. Following their work on Cronin’s critically acclaimed debut album The First Kiss of Love, Karl Odlum (Glen Hansard, The Frames), Ger McDonnell (U2, Manic Street Preachers) and Mick Cronin return as producers.

Cronin have also brought in outside instrumentalists and special guests like The Waterboys, whose violinist Steve Wickham features on two tracks. In addition, Damien Rice cello player Vivienne Long features on track Need and Terry Edwards (PJ Harvey, Gallon Drunk) on the remix of Little London.

Across the album’s six interrogative tracks the band displays inspired lyrics, deep orchestral arrangements and lifting hooks.

For the album artwork, the band enlisted DJ, photographer and Oasis brother Paul Gallagher.

GM Promo: new promising post-punk single from Death Star Discotheque https://www.gentlemenrecordings.com/gm-promo-new-promising-post-punk-single-from-death-star-discotheque/ https://www.gentlemenrecordings.com/gm-promo-new-promising-post-punk-single-from-death-star-discotheque/#respond Thu, 11 Jun 2020 19:22:54 +0000 https://www.gentlemenrecordings.com/?p=6092
Death Star Discotheque

Besides signing bands we now also do promotions for other (unsigned) bands. We do promotions for them from the name ‘GM Promo’.

On Thursday 28th of May the promising single “We Are XTC / Dance” was released by Death Star Discotheque. A post-punk song that takes you back to the 80’s. The single already has got some positive responses from several countries. The band is certainly not standing still during these Corona times. The guys are working towards an EP or maybe even a complete debut album before the end of this year.

Audience massively asked for a single
Death Star Discotheque consists of singer and guitarist Michel (from The Galactic Lo-Fi Orchestra), drummer Roelof (from Plunk) and Eugene. All three grew up in the new-wave / post-punk of the late 80s. Ramones, Hüsker Dü and Joy Division are some of many bands of inspiration. But newer bands such as Fontaines DC and Murder Capital are also well listened to.

Death Star Discotheque started in late 2018. Their first self-titled EP from 2019 was received with rave reviews. In March 2020 the single “Wasting Time” was released, and now, two months later, they have a potential hit with “We Are XTC / Dance”. During live shows the song was picked up so well that the audience asked en masse when the band would release it as a single. They were so eager to listen, but it was nowhere online. The band has listened carefully to its audience, so now the time has finally come: “We Are XTC / Dance” has been released as a long awaited single.

The song is not so much about the use of XTC, but more about enjoying life. ‘Dance’ represents the adrenaline rush. The message can be described as “live now, get the most out of it”. “In life we all have to deal with setbacks and less pleasant things, but we always have to keep going.” On that way, this song can be fascinating for everyone. And now in times of the Corona virus, the feeling of always have to keep going applies even more.

Experienced trio turns out to be a golden combination
Together the men bring a good dose of experience to the band. Michel has played in over ten other bands since 1986. All three have provided support for large bands, such as Heideroosjes, Peter Pan Speedrock, Nada Surf and Weezer.

The trio turns out to be a golden combination. One song after another came out of the studio, making it easy to arrange live shows quickly. The 2019 agenda quickly filled up, with a tour trough Germany. For example, the Wild at Heart in Berlin was introduced to the trio from Eindhoven, where the reactions were purely positive.

Death Star Discotheque may consist of three “old hands”, they have the energy of young dogs. 2020 was also well planned until the Corona virus came. But they certainly didn’t sit on their lazy ass. In the Effenaar they played a show as a live stream as part of the Isolation Sessions. And they continue to write and record new songs.

If it’s up to the band, there will be an EP or even a complete debut album at the end of this year. And if possible, a tour through England in 2021. They have been eager for months to release their now perfected single and perform live. In short: big plans.
